3rd Annual STEP Alumni Conference

GSE-XSTEP0002

Stanford Graduate School of Education

Description

(Note: Registration at this site is only for educators who are seeking to earn 1 Continuing Education Credit from Stanford. Educators who wish to attend the November 7th STEP Alumni Conference for free should register at the separate sign up form.)

This day is organized by STEP alumni and will feature workshops, presentations, panels, and discussions led by fellow STEP alumni. This year's conference theme is Anti-Bias Education which we believe to be a key facet of teaching for equity. The day will begin with an informal check in to a Zoom forum, with an opportunity for participants to greet each other and update their colleagues on where they are currently teaching and what they hope to learn from the day's events. It will be followed by a keynote speech by a STEP alum who will share their experience as an anti-racist educator, and then there will be a menu of one hour sessions led by STEP alumni.

The goal of this conference is for STEP alumni to learn from and with each other about practices and research that advance anti-racist teaching. By attending a series of one-hour workshops from a varied menu of offerings, we hope that STEP alumni will leave energized and enriched by their participation at the conference.

In addition to spending the day with other teachers and educators who began their careers in STEP, attendees will also have the opportunity to do related follow- up work and receive one Continuing Education Credit (CEU) from Stanford University.

All current educators who graduated from STEP are invited to register for the November 7th virtual conference and to also bring along one colleague from their school or a friend who is also an educator.

Option 2: participation for 7 hours at the STEP Alumni Conference on Saturday, November 7, 2020, followed by 3 asynchronous hours of reflective and/or curricular related writing as described below.

For each of the above options, the output of your work will include one of products described below. All written work must be submitted by December 10, 2020.

A. Meet with a colleague who attended the conference with you and collaborate on a lesson plan that will address the theme of the conference. Submit the lesson plan with all relevant resources and materials, as well as a commentary on how the lesson or series of lessons will support your students and your school.

B. Write a reflection of 5-8 pages to address the following prompts:

  • How will today’s conference impact your work as an educator?
  • What are two or more practices you currently use to build an anti-racist classroom and school learning environment? Describe in detail how those practices align with the information you learned about at the conference and describe how you will continue to use those practices.
  • What are two or more ways in which you will change some of your current practices, based on the information you learned about today? Describe those current practices or policies and what changes you plan to make.

C. Are there any unit or lesson plan ideas that you took away from the Nov 7 conference? If so, please describe each briefly and submit a lesson outline with relevant resources and materials that you will use in that lesson plan. Include clearly defined learning goals and an assessment you will use at the end of the unit or series of lessons. Submit samples of student work from the lessons you implemented.
