FAQs for Fall Enrollment
What’s new this quarter?
This quarter, the university’s enrollment period is shorter than usual, running September 1-4, and the autumn quarter start of instruction date has been moved forward. Instruction begins the week of September 14. To be able to better serve you during this truncated registration period, we’ve made a change to the SCPD autumn quarter enrollment process, allowing students to preregister.
What is preregistration?
Preregistration, from August 10-August 31, allows you, as an SCPD NDO student, to request course enrollment in anticipation of the university-wide enrollment period happening September 1-4th. This additional period will allow each academic department ample time to process your course request and provide an enrollment decision.
What does this mean to me?
If you’re a current SCPD NDO student, the course enrollment process is the same as it’s always been. To enroll in a course, first check your mystanfordconnection to confirm that your application, academic transcripts, and visa documents (if applicable) have all been submitted. Then, on or after August 10th, visit online.stanford.edu to preregister in your courses, and complete the payment process.
Courses will fill up quickly! We encourage you to act as soon as you can.
If you’re a new SCPD NDO student, you must submit a completed application, along with copies of your academic transcripts and visa documents (if applicable).
We highly encourage you to submit your application as soon as possible, even before the full list of courses is published on August 10. Applications will be reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis, so the earlier you submit your application, the sooner you’ll receive a decision.
Submitting an application does not constitute a commitment on your part, and you will not incur tuition fee charges until you preregister in a course and your application is processed and approved.
Visit mystanfordconnection for information on submitting your application and receiving approval.
When will I be notified that my course enrollment is confirmed?
You will receive an email with the outcome of your enrollment decision between August 10-September 4.
Do I need to pay full tuition at the time of course preregistration?
Your tuition fee is due when you complete your course registration, whether during the preregistration or standard registration period. If, for any reason, your course enrollment request is not approved, your tuition fee will be returned to you through your original method of payment.
I understand that courses and schedules are subject to change during the preregistration period. What if my course is cancelled?
If your course is cancelled by the department before the beginning of the autumn quarter, you will be notified via email. You will receive a full refund of the tuition fee, unless you opt to transfer to an alternative course.
Can I cancel my course enrollment without any penalty fees?
If you cancel your course enrollment prior to September 14, you will receive a full refund of your course tuition.
If you cancel your course enrollment between September 14 and October 2, a $100 drop fee will be applied.
Can I transfer to another course during the preregistration period?
You can transfer to another course on or before September 14 without penalty.
If you request to transfer courses after September 14th, approval of the course transfer is at the discretion of the academic department.
As an Honors Cooperative Program student, can I preregister for courses?
As an HCP student, you can not preregister for courses, as additional processing and approval is not needed. You will be able to enroll through Axess from September 1-4. Seats available for HCP students will not be occupied by students who complete preregistration before September 1, so there’s no need for you to worry about course availability.
As a matriculated student at Stanford University student, can I preregister for courses?
As a matriculated student, you can not preregister for courses, as additional processing and approval is not needed. You will be able to enroll through Axess from September 1-4. Seats available for matriculated students will not be occupied by students who complete preregistrations before September 1, so there’s no need for you to worry about course availability.
What grading policy can I expect this autumn quarter?
Recently-announced grading policy changes mandate that all courses offered for a letter grade must also offer students the option of taking the course for a “credit” or “no credit” grade. If you are an SCPD student considering or pursuing a graduate certificate, we recommend that you take all classes for a letter grade. If you have questions about your course’s grading policy, please contact a member of the course’s teaching team.
